Putting yourself forward almost always leads to embarrassment. At a banquet Jesus notices the people selecting for themselves seats of honor, grasping at privilege. He advises the crowd to instead seek the lower places at the banquet. It is far better to be asked to move up the line than for someone to come who deserves the high place you have occupied and be asked to move down. Your shame or your exaltation is made public by your choice. The spiritual principle cuts more deeply that those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Are we humble or are we grasping at self glorification? May we all be motivated to take the place of service rather than being served. May we follow what Jesus says and worry more about our faithfulness to Him than the favor of those around us.
