Luke 13:22-30 A Narrow Way

Topic: Daily Bible Study

Here is one of the hard sayings of Jesus.  A bystander asks if only a few people will be saved, and Jesus answers, “Yes.”  What a horrible surprise.  This man of love and help for the poor and compassion acknowledges that the way into heaven is difficult and narrow, many will not enter.  After He drops this bombshell, Jesus informs the crowd that the way is not only narrow, but will be shut.  There is a time for decision and once that time is passed no amount of pleading will reopen the door.  Even having seen and listened to Christ firsthand will not be enough to procure entrance if someone misses the appointed time.  Paradoxically, after Jesus has described how difficult it is to enter heaven, He describes the streaming in of people from all nations on earth into intimacy with God.  Jesus warns His listeners that they are in danger of being kept from God while multitudes from other, “non-chosen” nations draw near to God.  Thus Jesus tells us the way is narrow, yet available to anyone.  How very clear in light of the Gospel.  Anyone can place their trust in Jesus to forgive their sins and receive eternal life with God.  Nevertheless there is a time and place for deciding, the decision itself, though simple, is not easy.  The crowd is in danger of hearing the message and refusing to trust Christ in the time before they die.  If you have not started trusting in Him instead of yourself for getting to heaven now is the time to transfer that trust.
