Even today many people believe that disasters in life are the result of God’s anger. They equate particularly gruesome deaths with some sense that the person was cursed by God. It has the same sort of superstition as those who assume that the expression left on a dead person’s face tells the story of their life. When confronted with the idea that certain Galileans must have been really bad to meet the end they did, Jesus replies that all must repent or perish. Particular deaths do not single people out as greater sinners than others. We all face death, whether we perish or live on with God is a question of repenting from our sin, not measuring it against the sins of others.
